Tastes better out of a glass bottle.

It’s about the nostalgic feeling.

Yeah. I can’t stand them either.

I’m sure it WOULD taste better, if you could get any of it to come out.

It’s because glass bottles are supposedly classier than the splort of a plastic squeeze bottle, even if the glass requires too much effort to extract the ketchup.

It’s “fancier” and “more nostalgic”.

Because nothing screams fancy like having to smack the bottom of a ketchup bottle until it flies everywhere and gets all over your clothes.

Pro tip! Ketchup is a non-newtonian fluid, so the more you shake or smack the bottle, the stiffer it gets.

So is coffee, apparently, but it has a much lower viscosity.

Tap on the ‘57' and your patience will be rewarded.

I like glass better and hope they reuse them after a good cleaning rather than having to grind them and cook them into bottles again like they do with the plastic. I’m sure they don’t, but it would be nicer for the environment.

Restaurants do it because they can refill them with off-brand ketchup and save some $$.

Tap on the 57 with a hammer until the bottle breaks and you can get the ketchup out finally.

I went with my son to the local recycler’s as a chaperone for one of his class trips. The owner of the place absolutely hates having to recycle glass. He said it isn’t worth the time and effort given the economics of glass recycling. By the time it gets sorted (clear, green, brown, etc.), they’ve already lost money. It all has to be sorted by hand and is really risky for the workers.

The other things they hate are water hoses and kitchen knives. The hoses get caught up in the sorting machinery. Knives pose the same risk as glass.

Yes, but if Heinz would do returns and wash them it would be substantially better. Hence the reuse, not recycle.

Kinja'd!!! TheRealBicycleBuck > PotbellyJoe and 42 others

The problem is getting it back to Heinz. It’s not like Heinz has a fleet of delivery trucks selling to the end users. That means that someone else - the grocery store, the recycling center, etc. - has to maintain a Heinz bottle bin into which only Heinz bottles go. That takes up space, requires labor, and costs money. While the return transportation costs might not be that high since the truck that delivers Heinz to the store can certainly pick up the empties, it’s the space and labor costs at the store, then at the distribution center, then at the manufacturer, that eat up any cost savings by reusing the bottles.

No matter where you tap it make sure you hold it at a 45 degree angle. Also, give the side of the bottle a good smack before you start to pour.

These are my favorite. Easy to squeeze, tiny nozzle allows for accurate ketchup dispersal. Perfect. I don’t care that it has Dollar Store brand “catsup” in it.

Unless it’s run inside of the same distribution channels. The trucks that drop-off to the restaurants do the pickups, the trucks that do the drop-offs to that distributor do the pickups, all the way upstream until you are back to the bottler. There are more than a few empty trucks running around between deliveries.

Like I said, it’s not like this is in place, but it would be better in terms of material and environmental impact of them.

A system similar is used in a lot of countries for bottled products. To buy more you return the old containers or you have to buy more bottles at a slightly higher cost.

Kinja'd!!! TheRealBicycleBuck > PotbellyJoe and 42 others

This is the last-mile problem exemplified. In small-town America, even in small-city America, there aren’t delivery trucks going to the individual restaurants unless they are very high-volume fast-food joints. Restaurants which are likely to use glass bottles are usually going to a local distributor to pick up their supplies.

That pushes the bottle sorting and storage functions onto the distributor. An empty bottle takes up as much space as a full one, making storage for any length of time a losing proposition.

I’ve been to several border towns where bottles are reused until the break. The difference is in the distribution system. Labor and transportation costs are really low, so they can afford to reuse the bottles. There is also an acceptance of the condition of the reused bottle. Gringos are served in new bottles. Locals are served in the ratty bottles that have rings of ground glass around them where they have been bumping into each other for years.

Yes, food containers have to be specifically designed for wash and reuse. If not, you can get subtle scratches and imperfections in the surface over time that can trap dirt and bacteria. Bigger problem with plastics, but glass too.
